REGION

Peravia Province and the South

A gem admired for many reasons but with many treasures to discover.
Not only because the Central Mountain Range runs to the northwest of the province, also known as the Sierra de Ocoa,
but also because important rivers like the Nizao, Ocoa, and Baní flow through and enhance these lands.

The Peravia province covers an area of 785.20 km2, bordering to the north with San José de Ocoa province, to the east with San Cristóbal, to the west with Azua Province, and to the south with the Caribbean Sea.

Peravia has an approximate population of 200,000 inhabitants. Its primary economic activities are centered around agriculture, livestock, and fishing. However, significant energy projects as well as real estate and tourism resorts will be integrated into the economic activity of the area.

About the South

A region rich in traditions, where our roots find their highest representation. Dances, parties, celebrations, and fairs that make the South a unique place in our national territory. The Sarandunga dance, for example, with Afro-Dominican music danced on the day of San Juan Bautista, the Palos dance, or the Chuines dance, both with folk instruments. But when it comes to traditions, especially in this region, we must mention the Mango Fair as one of the most significant representatives of the area, traditionally synonymous with quality mangoes. It is the birthplace of the famous 'Banilejo' mango and a great genetic diversity of this fruit, which is why you can find a large number of local mango varieties. Peppers, watermelons, tomatoes, cashews, onions, and loquats also thrive in all their glory.

All lovers of gastronomy are in luck. Mangoes, goat, corn arepas, local seafood, or sweets like higo relleno de leche, majareta, or dulce de leche with coconut are just a sample of what you can enjoy during your visit to Baní.

Lush and captivating. That's how the flora and fauna of the area are. The South has many virtues, but if there's something that characterizes it, it's precisely its ecosystem. In every corner, in all unimaginable forms, this animal and plant world is manifested.

The trinitaria, guayacán, cambrón, or olive. The mangroves, cacti, cayuco, saona, baitoa, all of these are names that give identity to the area and make it unique, just as it happens when we take a look at its fauna and find the iguana, pelicans, flamingos, hummingbirds, ñola, etc.
